Program Philosophy

Program Philosophy

Overall, we believe that the changes we want to see in the world are only possible if we invest time in people.  Changes won’t result from giving things away, they won’t result from throwing more money at a problem, and they won’t happen by rushing to reach more and more places without committing the time to create high quality impacts.  We are just as impatient as the rest of the people looking to make change in the world, but what we have learned through our mistakes and our slow and small successes is that investing time in a team of passionate leaders will keep us on the path to reaching our vision. Build capacity in people. ... Read More

Classroom Libraries

Classroom Libraries

The Classroom Libraries program is our newest educational initiative. Working with partners BETT and Room to Read, PEPY has created libraries inside classrooms that are stocked with Khmer Early Literacy Readers and children's literature. Divided by grade levels, each library is supplemented with classroom activities that focus on early literacy and foster the enjoyment of reading at a young age. Read More

Environment and Health Education

Environment and Health Education

The Environment and Health Education Program works to increase students' awareness of their natural environment and the positive impact they can have on it.  PEPY works with local environmental organizations to support eight eco-clubs at primary schools throughout the Chanleas Dai area. PEPY also facilitates monthly showings of New World videos, a Khmer-version of Sesame Street, developed and produced entirely locally by PEPY partner RDIC. This series teaches about environmental and health-related topics alongside Khmer literacy through the use of songs, animation, cartoons, and pop culture icons. Read More

Creative Learning Class

PEPY works with Chanleas Dai Junior High School to provide extra enrichment classes in addition to the standard government curriculum. These classes serve over 200 students per week and focus on social studies, science, and technology. In these classes, we use XO “$100” laptops, which were donated from the One Laptop Per Child organization. The XO laptops are designed to engage young learners, encourage creativity, and improve logical reasoning. XOs are quickly opening up students' eyes to new possibilities in thinking and learning. Using Scratch, an MIT-designed program, students are learning simple programming skills, sharpening critical thinking, improving math and science sk... Read More

Child-to-Child Program

Child-to-Child Program

The Child-to-Child Program is an educational initiative in Chanleas Dai Commune driven by its school-age participants. Facilitated by community members, these clubs emphasize learning through activities, hands-on projects, and by encouraging children to be role models in their communities. Through a dynamic process of discussing, brainstorming, problem solving, and finally taking action, student groups tackle issues such as dengue fever and basic household sanitation. Through this program the children learn not only the causes of these issues, but also how to effectively share information and create change in their own communities. Read More

Khmer Literacy

After baseline tests in October 2006, we found that many of the students at Chanleas Dai Primary School still could not read and write in Khmer. While the school had a small library set up by a large NGO several years ago, it was rarely used and kept locked most of the time. This led our team to focus on increasing Khmer literacy both in our school and the community. Our Khmer literacy program began in December 2006, starting by turning the rarely used library into a colorful space for students to read during school hours. In March 2007, we hired and trained a local woman in library management, and stocked the library with Khmer books of all levels. After meeting with government teachers a... Read More

Bike-to-School

Bike-to-School

National statistics show that the majority of Cambodian students do not continue past primary school. The Bike-to-School Program awards bicycles to graduating 6th graders as an incentive to remain in school and provides transportation to secondary schools, which are often far from the students' home villages.   Read More
