Creative Learning Class

PEPY works with Chanleas Dai Junior High School to provide extra enrichment classes in addition to the standard government curriculum. These classes serve over 200 students per week and focus on social studies, science, and technology. In these classes, we use XO “$100” laptops, which were donated from the One Laptop Per Child organization.

The XO laptops are designed to engage young learners, encourage creativity, and improve logical reasoning. XOs are quickly opening up students' eyes to new possibilities in thinking and learning. Using Scratch, an MIT-designed program, students are learning simple programming skills, sharpening critical thinking, improving math and science skills, and even strengthening their Khmer literacy.

In addition, Creative Learning Classes include an Engineering Club, which began in 2010, when students learned how to use LEGO's innovative WeDo robots during a three-day workshop led by volunteers from National Instruments.

Since that initial training, have students engaged in a variety of engineering and computer science learning projects such as working with Google Sketch to get a feel for the basic laws of architecture, learned the basics of computer repair to keep their XO laptops in good working order, and experimented with building structures out of various materials.
